Book launch "“From the Trenches Towards the Skies: Transatlantic Hero Steponas Darius and His Journey In the U.S. Army (1917-1919)” by CSM Alvydas Tamošiūnas

To commemorate the 130th anniversary of Steponas Darius’ birth, the Baltic Defence College inaugurated a book titled “From the Trenches Towards the Skies: Transatlantic Hero Steponas Darius and His Journey In the U.S. Army (1917-1919)” by CSM Alvydas Tamošiūnas.
Steponas Darius (known as Stephen Darius in the US; born Steponas Jucevičius-Darašius; January 8, 1896 – July 17, 1933) was a Lithuanian-American pilot who died together with his crewmate Stasys Girėnas during a non-stop flight attempt in the Lituanica from New York City to Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1933.

CSM Alvydas Tamošiūnas (LTU AF), author and compiler of memoirs, noted:

"On 17 July 2023, Lithuania commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Lituanica flight—a decisive transatlantic operation executed by pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas. The mission was marked by operational complexity, both in the air and during the challenging pre-flight preparations. Their unwavering commitment to Lithuania and their ability to function as a unified crew reflect attributes forged through disciplined military service.

Both aviators served in the United States Army during World War I, where Darius, in particular, demonstrated exceptional military intelligence. His service provided him with extensive expertise in warfare, leadership, tactics, strategy, and the integration of military and sports cultures. These experiences shaped him into a proactive and innovative contributor to the development of the Lithuanian state and its armed forces.

Even though the mission ended tragically—with the aircraft crashing in what is now Polish territory, just a few hundred kilometers short of their destination in Kaunas—the legacy of Darius and Girėnas endures. Their flight proved that the Atlantic Ocean does not divide cultures; it connects them. It is not a barrier, but a bridge—one that can be crossed through commitment to ambitious and strategic goals. Their service in both the United States and Lithuanian Armed Forces stands as a distinguished example for younger generations. Through discipline, duty, and unwavering commitment, Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas embodied values that continue to inspire. Their legacy reflects the enduring importance of military professionalism, national pride, and leadership."
